Martin Luther King Day is a relatively new federal holiday. President Ronald Reagan established it in 1983 but only in 2000 it was officially observed in all 50 states.
King Day of Service
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. once said, "Life's most persistent and urgent question is: 'What are you doing for others?'". Martin Luther Day is not only for celebration and remembrance. Across America people volunteer in hospitals, shelters and prisons and wherever people need some help. It is a day of volunteering to feed the hungry, rehabilitate housing, tutoring those who can’t read, consoling the broken-hearted and a thousand other projects for building the beloved community of his dream.
TASK: Martin Luther King Days has different names in some states. Find in which states it is called differently and how.
