In November, nine U.S. states proposed cannabis reform legislation for medical marijuana and non-medical adult use. Twenty-six states and the District of Columbia have laws legalizing marijuana in some form now. Three other states will soon join after passing measures permitting use of medical marijuana. Seven states and the District of Columbia expanded their laws legalizing marijuana for recreational use. Then, California, Massachusetts and Nevada legalized recreational use in November.
Despite the fact that recreational use of marijuana is now legal in California, the new law states that employers are still allowed to maintain a drug- and alcohol-free workplace and can keep company rules that prohibit the use of marijuana by employees.
