Art in 18th century

As you remember, The Declaration of Independence took place in 1776. The U.S. began creating their own history and national identity, a part of which, of course, expressed through art. So today we will be looking at some history paintings which means a lot of portaits

I will focus on only two artists as all the charateristics can be seen in the work of these two major ones of the period Both born in 1738, John Singleton Copley and Benjamin West. They extended the range of subject matter in American painting to include historical, mythological and landscape subjects as well as the traditional portrait. Copley's aspirations and attitude to the role of the painter in the colonies and 'young' America can be seen in his own remark:
"was it not for preserving the resemblance of particular persons, painting would not be known in the place. The people regard it as no more than any other useful trade ... like that of a carpenter, tailor, or shoemaker, not as one of the most noble arts in the world".
Take a look at some work from the two gentlemen

Orange Is the New Black

Something completly different today, but still, in some fashion, connected to the US politics. Hence, I believe you'll forgive me that I'm not writing about serious issues this time. ;)

Trump memes are winning the Internet recently. That should not be surprising since we all know the President-elect's rich facial expression, characteristic "tanned" complexion and his immortal haircut. If we add some of his "brilliant" quotes, we will have a recipe for a successful meme.

We remember everything, Mr. President

Trump promised to change his hairstyle if he won the elections. What will happen to famous "comb-over"?

A LOT of opponents

A competent person for a president?

Good Spell

The word "Gospel" originates from the words "good spell" not "god spell" as many people tend to believe. It is the genre of Christian music developed in 19th century. Gospel music usually has dominant vocals. Moreover, it is composed for various purposes e.g. aesthetic pleasure, ceremonial or even as an entertainment product for marketplace. The Gospel music has its roots in the black oral tradition and originates from African American religious experience. In fact the traces of this genre can be found even in 17th century. It utilizes a lot of repetitions, which at first was used to enable ones who couldn't read to participate in worship.

Probably the name "Gospel Song" was first officially introduced in 19th century in 1874 by Philip Bliss who realeased a songbook entitled "Gospel Songs. A Choice Collection of Hymns and Tunes." He introduced a new type of church music which was easier to grasp and easier to sing than the traditional church hymns and it served the needs of mass revivals in the great cities.

The music itself in general is characterized by dominant vocals with strong use of harmony and referencing lyrics of Christian nature. There are several subgenres which include "contemporary gospel", "urban contemporary gospel(black gospel)", "southern gospel" and "modern gospel music". Some of them utilize choirs, use piano or Hammond organ, tambourines, drums, bass guitar and electric guitar.

"South Park" and the elections

If you are a "South Park" fan, you probably know that all of the episodes are really current. However, you may be curious about the "Oh Jeez" episode as it had its premiere only one night after the elections. How is it possible that they've predicted Trump's win (which was quite unexpected)? The fact is – they didn't!

Descriptions and a teaser of the episode were clearly suggesting that "South Park" creators had anticipated Hillary Clinton's victory. The episode was initially called "The Very First Gentleman" and a promo "showed PC Principal getting South Park Elementary ready for a visit from Bill Clinton to fight male locker room mentality." At the last minute, Matt Stone and Trey Parker – creators of the show, had to change the name of the episode and rewrite some of the scenes they’d made before, so that they would capture the shock of Trump's win.

The 2008 "About Last Night..." episode had also been written before the voting night when Obama won. However, that time Trey Parker said that in case of  McCain's win "they would have aired the episode anyway and later dealt with their own Dewey defeats Truman moment." Nevertheless, the episode wasn't finished until the morning of the day of its premiere. The reason of this was that they wanted to include excerpts of Obama's acceptance speech into the episode.

Just a little bit more up his sleeve

As we have already learnt the new President-elect of the United States hasn't really a heart of gold. Let's look at some another cases of his history so that we can learn more about one of the most important people in the world within the next few years.

Trump University

In 2005, Donald Trump announced establishing a for-profit education company, which he called "university". It ran a real estate training program to teach his business secrets. "Students", encouraged by satisfying free seminars, payed between $1,000 and $35,000 to learn how to get rich. As it turned out, Trump had little in common with the university and its curriculum and, as a result, participants started faulting Trump for the university being a scam.

New York State authorities pointed out that the use of the word "university" is a violation of the state law, however, the institution hadn't change its name until a second such notification five years later. It was made over into "Trump Entrepreneurial Institute". A civil suit, accusing Trump of making false claims and defrauding consumers, was filed by the New York State in 2013.

Finally gave up?

On November 18, 2016 Trump agreed to pay $25 million to settle a series of lawsuits concerning Trump University, including $1 million assessed by the State of New York for violating education laws. The settlement, however, specifies that Trump doesn't admit to do any wrongdoing. He also mentioned that during a February debate: "It’s something I could have settled many times. I could settle it right now for very little money, but I don’t want to do it out of principle. The people that took the course all signed — most — many — many signed report cards saying it was fantastic, it was wonderful, it was beautiful."

Living the American Dream

Being born in a prosperous family, as a son of the development company owner? Sounds like a great beginning of life but... Looking back at some cases from history we can assume that money doesn't always give happiness. However, it can undoubtedly give you fame if you use it in an appriopriate way. And "fame" isn't always a positive-sounding word, especially when we consider the new President-elect of the United States.

Donald Trump was born in New York where he also received a bachelor's degree in economics in 1968. Being only 25 he took control of his father's real estate and construction firm and that's how everything begun. Owning the Miss USA pageants, hosting a reality show, building golf courses or even owning a football team were only few of Trump's ways of "earning a living".

The Beauty Pageants

After the decision of getting in on the business, Donald Trump met with the couple - George Houraney and Jill Harth - who ran the American Dream pageant. After that meeting Trump was said to had "started making passes at her (Harth) almost immediately". Another time, he allegedly "asked them to bring some models to a party", at which he groped Harth. After breaking the contest dealings off, Trump was sued by Harth for sexual misbehaviour and, at the same time, by the couple together for the violation of contract. Trump was also alleged to keep black women out of the pageant.

In 2006, Tara Conner, Miss USA, was caught drinking underage and using cocaine at a New York nightclub. Nevertheless, Trump let her keep the title, provided she enter a drug rehabilitation program, what was criticized by Rosie O'Donnell, American comedian and television personality. This led to Trump's very blunt and personal reply criticizing O'Donnell, "After hearing about her comments, Trump fired back to People, calling her 'a woman out of control'".

Bankruptcies

Trump has never filed for personal bankruptcy. However, his hotels and casinos declared bankrupt several times to, as he admitted himself, re-negotiate debt with banks and owners of stock and bonds. "I’ve used the laws of this country to pare debt. ...this is nothing to do with me, personally. This is just a business. I haven’t even run these things. I only owned a piece of them. But if you look at our greatest businesspeople, most of them, in order to pare debt or change a company or change a structure, have used the laws to take a deal." - Trump told George Stephanopoulos in the interview for ABC News.

Donald Trump is very sensitive about implications about his personal bankruptcy. In an answer to these he declares that he's just playing the game. "...we’ll buy a company. We’ll have the company. We’ll throw it into a chapter. We’ll negotiate with the banks. We’ll make a fantastic deal. We’ll use those. But they were never personal. This is nothing personal. You know, it’s like on The Apprentice. It’s not personal. It’s just business. Okay?"

Beginnings of American music

First American music in fact was not American. It was brought there by Puritans and Spaniards. The dominant genres were psalms and other sacral songs which were sang a capella. At first it was used to evangelize native population and then it was developed into mass conducted by choir for colonizers.

Apart from religious music people developed America's own folk music which was firstly dependant upon Great Britain's and European's. Colonizers very often were borrowing melodies from the islanders, they even borrowed the melodie from "God Save the Queen" for the first draft of their own anthem. The most iconic instrument of American folk music is banjo other frequently used instruments like violins, drums and flutes.

That was a few informations just for the introduction.

Stay sharp and see you soon.
